Advertising Unlocked

Last Friday, December 19 was one of 70 IPA member agencies to open their doors for Advertising Unlocked, an IPA initiative aimed at introducing young people to the many careers available in the Advertising and Media industries. We welcomed 22 students from Blackheath’s Thomas Tallis School and hosted a series of workshop sessions throughout the day.

The day began with an introductory presentation from Dave and Dan into the industry as well as introducing the students to a mock brief for our client Jimmy’s Iced Coffee. Dan B followed, with a research and insight talk on how to consider target audiences and market conditions. Maj and Katy then took to the stage with a planning and implementation presentation outlining the considerations to take into account when planning.

The students then broke off into a series of teams to take part in media workshops run by specialists representing each media channel. The students then had to use the information they had learnt from each channel and apply this knowledge in the response to the brief in the form of a 10-minute presentation to their peers as well as our D19 judging panel.

The students delivered engaging and insightful presentations with the winning team (the team I mentored!!) coming up with a fantastic ‘Jimmy Loves’ campaign idea split across Digital, Radio and OOH media platforms, putting all they had learnt throughout the day into practise. Overall the day was a huge success, with students commenting:

“The day was very enjoyable and engaging”

“I didn’t think I would be interested in a career but now I am”

“I have learnt to be more open minded about my career options”

“I learnt to be more aware of advertising and how it affects daily life”

Big thanks to everyone involved… Monnie and Gav from Talon, Mark Barber from Radio Centre, Sam from Thinkbox, Sharan from Navigate and D19’s very own Sam H on print, for your help with the media workshops. Not forgetting to mention the rest of the team at D19 and of course all the students that made this day possible!
